About The Financial Farmer

The Financial Farmer was created to help Irish farming families get clarity and direction around one of the biggest decisions they will ever make — the future ownership of the family farm.

Farm succession can involve tax, ownership, family expectations, retirement, inheritance, legal structures and difficult conversations. The Financial Farmer exists to help families understand the bigger picture, identify the questions that need to be answered and move towards a clear succession plan.

Founded by Eamonn Walsh

His interest in farm succession comes from both professional experience and personal experience.

Eamonn Walsh

Founder

Eamonn Walsh is a Qualified Financial Adviser and fourth-generation farmer from the west of Ireland.

Having lived through succession within his own farming family, Eamonn understands that succession is rarely just a tax or legal question. It involves family, emotion, identity, livelihoods and the responsibility of deciding what happens to an asset that may have been passed through generations.

Through The Financial Farmer, Eamonn works with farming families to help them understand where they currently stand, what issues need to be considered and what questions need to be addressed before legal, tax and financial professionals are brought together to implement a plan.

Clarity Before Implementation

The Financial Farmer focuses on helping farming families understand their succession position before decisions are implemented. That can include identifying:

  • Who is involved in the succession
  • What assets and liabilities exist
  • How ownership is currently structured
  • The intentions of the current owners
  • The position of potential successors
  • Possible tax considerations
  • Areas requiring specialist legal, tax or financial advice
  • Unanswered questions that could affect the plan

The objective is not to replace solicitors, accountants, tax advisers or regulated financial advisers.

It is to help the family arrive at those conversations better prepared, with greater clarity around what they are trying to achieve.

Built Around Farming Families

Every farm is different.

Some families want to transfer the farm during their lifetime. Others are planning through inheritance. Some have one clear successor. Others have several children, businesses, houses, forestry, pensions or off-farm assets that all need to be considered together.

The Financial Farmer is built around helping families work through that complexity one step at a time.

The next step is a one-to-one Succession Planning Session.
